Is Hermann worth the trip?

My husband and I are looking for a nice relaxing place to visit and explore. Everything that I read about Hermann seems to be conflicted. Is it worth a three hour trip?

Depends on when you go and what type of lodging you want. My last visit was about 5 years ago. My husband and I are campers; there is just 1 campground in town. We ended up staying several miles away at the nearest state park. There are several B&B's in town. If you go, try to go when there is a festival; that adds to the experience. Visit the wineries in Hermann and the surrounding area. Stone Hill is the largest and has the most activities throughout the year. Several of the wineries can provide a picnic for you. Some have dining if you make a reservation. There is limited dining in Hermann for the evening; you need to eat early. If you like to bike, the Katy Trail is nearby.

We stayed at the Hermann Hill Cottages and they were incredible. Very relaxing and very romantic. Each cottage has a private hot tub overlooking the river, a fireplace, a steam shower, flat screen TV's. I highly, highly recommend it. See if any are available this fall- it would be a perfect time to go and hit the local wineries.

Hermann is a nice little town, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you like wine. The six wineries are the primary attraction. Otherwise, there is some shopping and some "okay" restaurants (Stone Hill is probably the best).

If you do like wine, you will want to add a stop off in Augusta, which is maybe 30 miles east (across the river). Another little town you might enjoy exploring is Washington. All of these towns are along the Missouri River. If you enjoy bike riding, you can rent bikes and ride along the Katy Trail. which follows the Missouri.

So, to answer your question, if you enjoy visiting wineries, a weekend exploring Hermann, Augusta and Washington would be worth the 3 hour drive.

If you don't enjoy winery visits, I'd suggest a Sainte Genevieve and Kimmswick trip instead. Both charming towns on the Mississippi, just south of St. Louis.
