are dogs allowed on beaches

Are dogs allowed on the beaches in Long Beach, Mississippi? We are considering a trip but want to be able to share the surf with our dog.

thanks

Are dogs allowed on the beach?

Regulations concerning allowing dogs on the Mississippi Gulf Coast beaches are different for the three counties: Harrison, Hancock and Jackson County.

Harrison County does not allow dogs on the beach.

Hancock and Jackson Counties allow dogs on the beach with a leash.

From the FAQ:

www.gulfcoast.org/faq/

Long Beach is in Harrison County. So that means no dogs.

If you travel with pets don't even slow down in Gulfport/Biloxi. No dogs on their empty beaches. Casinos are average at best.

Texas is just about the last place to allow dogs. Sad so many have banned them.

They are allowed on Waveland beach and Ocean Springs beach which are just west and east of Gulfport/Biloxi.

Sad to say but dog owners not picking up after their pets have caused this. Really too bad.

One of the main reasons that dogs are banned from Gulfport/Biloxi beaches, is that so many areas are designated Least Tern nesting sanctuaries. While in a leash, and with respect for the designated nesting areas, it should not be an issue, but too often, owners have not respected the birds. Due to the irresponsible actions of a few, the ban was enacted.

Note: even without a dog, all visitors should respect those nesting areas too.

We keep our yacht in the Gulfport marina. Jones park is adjacent as well as white sand beach. We have a small dog .. Shih Tzu. His name is The Tipster. We take him anywhere we desire. Never a problem. AJAX seafood restaurant is right on the beach in Gulfport and they allow dogs. Our marina allows dogs. Jones park allows dogs. The area is very active during the summer so a leash is a must. I agree with Bill Hunt ... it's not the dogs causing the problems with nesting areas. There is some vague property rights issues that allows beach front owners to pull a catamaran up on the beach above the high tide. Plus we have a crews that groom the beach with mechanical equipment. It's a foolish ordinance.
