Relocating to Minneapolis. Where to live?

Hello all. I'm relocating from St Louis to Minneapolis and I'm curious your thoughts on where to live. My wife and I currently live in a newer suburb of St Louis. I'll be doing a short term 6 month lease and then my wife will join me where we'll get long term housing. My question is for the 6 month lease where do you suggest to get an apartment? I'll travel between offices in Plymouth, Downtown Minneapolis and Arden Hills. Ideally I'd like to be central to those locations so traffic isn't too much of an issue.

Suggestions? Is St Paul to far away?

Thanks for your help.

I agree with route61 but that said, stay west my friend. West is best! Minnetonka and Plymouth have a combined 8 million apartment complexes so there will be one to fit your needs. St Louis Park isn't bad but more of an inner ring burb. It would also have a lot of options. Wayzata would be the best but very few options would exist. There are a few places on or very near Lake Minnetonka which could be really enjoyable but would add to the commute. This would still be within a 40 minute commute of Arden Hills depending.

Good luck!

Josh,

Minneapolis is not St. Louis. I totally get your safety concerns, but you do not need to move to Minnetonka for safety. There are lots of reasons to go there, but safety should not be the only consideration.

As safety is your number one priority, I suggest you do some research into actual crime rates and go from there. You will be very happy with what you find.

I also think you are wise to get covered parking. Winter and cars are no fun!

Good luck and welcome to the Twin Cities. I hope you and your family will be happy here.

I'd suggest Northeast Minneapolis. Centrally located to Plymouth, Arden Hills and downtown Mpls. Northeast is a neat community, has a small-town feel to it. Fun restaurants and it's close to the river, parks etc. I used to live there and totally loved it! I always felt safe.

Look at Maple Grove. We are the next suburb north of Plymouth. It's an easy drive with several optional routes. You can also get on to 494/94 to go "around" to Arden Hills without going through Minneapolis. Our shopping and dining options are great...AND (little known fact) portions of MG are in the sterling Wayzata school district for long term consideration. I can easily be in downtown Minneapolis in 20 minutes and all the way to the airport in 30 (none rush hour). We've been here since 1989 and watched the city grow in a very positive and thoughtful way. Tons of rentals and also much new housing for purchase.
