36 Hours in Minneapolis

Greetings all,

Companion and I will be traveling to MN last weekend of June for Henderson Sauerkraut days. Flying into MSP very early Sat AM and leaving late Monday PM. We are looking to maximize our stay in your great city. That said, here is what we have tentatively planned:

Stay at Embassy Suites downtown (rate is $150/nt), other recommendations welcomed;

Rent car for one day to drive to Kraut festival (interesting roadside stops or the like?) on Saturday or Sunday, ditching the car and touring the rest on foot/transit/Uber;

Would like to see Minnehana Falls, Walker Art Center (or other museums), maybe see some live music.

Paisley Park would be unique, but not a necessity for us.

Your thoughts and suggestions are kindly appreciated. TIA!

The route to Henderson will lead you past Valleyfair Amusement Park, Canterbury Park horse track and the Mystic Lake Casino. These three attractions are very close to each other and are just off of Highway 169 in or near Shakopee.

If you do go to the Walker, spend sometime outside in front at the Sculpture Garden.

Other Art Museums include MIA, the Weisman, & TMORA, https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g433…

If you are Prince fans and as long as you are renting a car, Paisley Park can be on your drive to Henderson. However you decide to head out of Minneapolis, go west on Hwy 5. Stop in Chanhassen for the large mural on the side of the Chanhassen Cinema, then continue a mile west to Paisley Park. Your choice on scheduling a tour or just doing a drive by . Note that parking is ONLY available for those taking a tour. Then continue west to Hwy 41, go south to 169, which takes you towards Henderson.

I don't think there are any music festivals scheduled for that weekend, but as we get closer to summer I'd check the calendars. There are a number of local spots with live music, as well as music in the parks sort of thing. Embassy Suites Downtown is just a 2 block walk to First Ave, which again if you're a Prince Fan, you will enjoy.

Is it June 22-23 or June 29-30? The website says last weekend in June, but the facebook events for past Sauerkraut days are June 22-25th-ish.

If it is the last full weekend in June, this year would be 28/29/30th. 2018's would be 22/23/24th as Sunday fell on the 1st last year. Could be wrong but just my guess given the info that is out there.

We love Nicolet Mall (https:/…) during the summer although we usually go for a Friday happy hour so I am not sure how it would be on the weekend. Another stop on the way to Henderson may be the landscape arboretum (http://www.arboretum.umn.edu/). Minnehaha Falls and the Walker are good choices. Others are Lake Calhoun (Bde Mka Ska) and of course the Mall of America which you can take the light rail to. Lake Harriet has a band shell and may have live music Sat evening. Mill City Museum and farmers market is nice and you can walk out onto the stone arch bridge in that area as well. Have fun! I am curious how you happened upon Sauerkraut Days. I love sauerkraut!

Wonderful advice, everyone!

@ktrue, we were on a tourist boat in Portland, ME, and spotted someone wearing a really cook Kraut Days t-shirt. We looked it up and decided to go :) We enjoy quirky small town festivals like that. And love sauerkraut too!
