Please share your thoughts our our Duluth Itinerary

Sunday, July 28: Arrive late in the afternoon. Check in. Find a place to have dinner. Stock up at the grocery store after supper.

July 29: Split Rock Lighthouse, Gooseberry Falls (trying to leave town to avoid crowds at Tall Ship Festival)

July 30: Irving Ore Boat, Aquarium, Enger Tower after supper (Can we walk from the boat to the Aquarium?)

July 31: Maritime Museum, explore Canal Park and Lakewalk, Spirit Mountain Zip line

Aug. 1: Lake Superior RR Museum, beach on Park Point

We have elementary school age kids, so we'd like to move at a moderate pace, with free time after supper for swimming in the hotel pool.

I've been to Duluth once before, sans children, but it's been 15 years. I know the kids would not do well in Glensheen and we've been to lots of zoos. Is there anything else grade school kids might enjoy that I'm missing? Suggested itinerary changes? Thanks!

We love the Duluth Grill on 27th ave west. Very accommodating, gluten free available, and organic. It can get busy, so going on off-times is a great idea. Chester Creek Cafe (At Sara's Table) is also a great choice, and a 5 minute drive from Canal Park (on 9th Street and 19th Ave E). Pizza Luce on Superior St. and Lake Ave is great, but parking can be a bear--if you can walk it, do that (in addition to pizza, they have a great and relatively inexpensive brunch menu). These are all far better (and no more expensive) than Grandma's. Oh, and if you're looking for a train ride, we love the Western Waterfront Train. If you're already driving up the shore, you won't see much new on the Lake Superior Railroad (although that's nice too). You go the other way, up the St. Louis River. It's based off of Grand Avenue, near the zoo. Might be a lot to pair with Spirit Mountain, but it's also close to that, and it's a bit cheaper than the other train. Also, if you can, bring your bikes. The Lakewalk is such a gem. You can bike from the Lift Bridge to Leif Erickson to see the rose garden, "castle," and a great rock-throwing beach area. If you're athletic, you can go all the way to the Lakeside neighborhood--6 miles from the bridge. My kids, 8 and 10, can do it there-and-back in half a day (we live in Lakeside) with lots of stops for food, ice cream and water, all of which are along the way. Can be a little crowded, so review passing/lane manners. Have fun!
