Is it at all possible to see the hector dolphins in late April?
If not, when is best?
Hi. I've asked my accomodation owners this question a few weeks ago. They told me the dolphins will arrive end of Nov or early Dec, and stay until Apr. Cheers.
Btw, hector's dolphins are in Porpoise Bay (near Curio Bay).
I think the Hectors will be around in April...but who knows really? What makes the biggest difference is the weather, as the wind down in the catlins is notoriously furious, so when the waves are breaking hard in Porpoise bay it's impossible to tell if the dolphins are around or not. They love to come and play with people when the sea is somewhat calm. FYI, as GoogEarth shows, Porpoise bay and Curio Bay are just around a rocky point from one another. A totally fabulous place!!
Are the Hectors in Curio and Porpoise Bay? What's the weather like in December/January in the Catlins?
The Catlins can have stunning weather but often gales and storms will blow up from Antarctica with no warning. So expect everything - sun, rain, sleet, gale force winds at any time of the year.
It is the rugged remoteness of the Catlins with it's raw weather which many find so appealing.
