Thoroughly Confused! Where to Stay?

We are a young couple in our sixties and are planning a visit to Northwest Michigan in early May. We are into everything, from hiking and biking and kayaking to foodie eatiing and drinking. I have researched all of the colorful brochures of TC, and environs, and am searching for a nice accomodation, not too many kiddies running about, more on the quiet side but not isolated. Any ideas? Romantic would be a big plus!

We are open to anyhing from private house, condo, to b and b and hotel/motel. Plan on at least two places as we will be there for 9 to 14 days.

Thanks for the help!

Try the Tamarack Lodge. Or the Wellington B&B. Park Place Hotel is very centrally located downtown.

The Homestead Resort out on the Leelanau Peninsula is a family resort; however I do beleive they have accommodations for couples or a kid free zone!

All of the above are great choices, and all give you options. The Wellington would be the most romantic inside...but the Tamarack will give you lovely water views and a balcony, which for our money is even more so...the Park Place will be the "hotel" of the group, but will put you right downtown, with many fine restaurants and shops just an easy walk away.

As said, the Homestead is "out on the L Peninsula." If you want to spend prt of that 9-14 days in another area not too far away we can give you a lot of other fine suggestions and locations.

We would lovwe to stay at the Homestead on the way up, them on to TC and then onward maybe to Leland, or Leelanau, or Sutten Bay or up to Petoskey? Thanks so much for the suggestion of Tamarack!.. Looks great. We will stay there for sure.

The Leelanau towns you mention (Leland, Empire, Sutton's Bay, etc.) really aren't all that far apart from each other. I'd suggest you choose one for your "TC area hub," then resettle in Petoskey (if that's where you're headed) for the rest of your trip (TC to Petoskey is roughly an hour).

Besides Tamarack and Homestead on the Leelanau side, I'd also suggest the Inn at Black Star Farms. The rooms and property are lovely, the food at the restaurant is quite good, and free tastings at he adjacent winery. Only downside is no water views. Also nearby, though I have not stayed there, is the Anchor Inn and the Red Lion Motor Lodge--the latter appears to have a sort of funky, retro appeal.

Since you mention hiking and biking, both would be available in and around Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore, while another biking option outside the park allows you take the (paved) Leelanau Trail from TC all the way to Sutton's Bay. Also, there's a paved from Charlevoix to Petoskey (and beyond) for biking as well...much of that trail hugs the Lake Michigan shore.

Enjoy your visit!

"...stay at th Homstead on the way up..." There is no on the way up...Ch is closer to TC. Here's a suggestion. Head to Mackinac Island for starters. Stay at least 2 nights, giving you plenty of time to bike around and over. A very nice ride, and plenty of scenic and romantic lodging choices...Dining too. Then on the way to TC, go through Harbor Springs...Petoskey...Charlevoix...Elk Rapids, maybe spending the night in P or Ch. Then a few days in TC at the Tamarack, biking, hiking, shopping, exploring the Old Mission Peninsula. Then on to the Homestead and the Leelanau Peninsula, Sleeping Bear Dunes, etc. You can easily structure it within 9-14 days, and it will give you the very best this area has to offer.....Many more options to go along with the biking, of course....It should be a very good trip.

Well then you can easily fill the next few weeks doing research. There is so much good info on the web, that the best I can do is say - If you do a search for "Fly Fishing Traverse City", you will see for yourself. But to give you a taste of what you'll find, "Fly Rod and Reel" magazine calls TC one of the "Top Retirement F-F Town in the US"...and I'm pretty sure you don't even have to be retired!

Really, there are so many good spots, so many outfitters - as you will see - You might want to ask for activity suggestions for the one who doesn't fly fish. BUT...it all might still hinge on the weather/whether the fish are biting....

South of TC by about 30 minutes is Wolfe Outfitters which will do guided fly-fishing. Anything from basic lessons to guided trips.

Another area, a little bit quieter, is Bellaire near Torch Lake and Shanty Creek. It is south of Petoskey about 30 miles. A wonderful Bed and Breakfast is the Grand Victorian http://www.grandvictorian.com/. Cute, little town with the well-known Short's Brewing Company, good restaurants and unique shops within walking distance of the B & B.

A nice place that is walking distance to downtown Petoskey is Staffords Perry Hotel, www.staffords.com

There is also a fly-fishing company that services several rivers www.reelwatersmi.com

Bellaire and Petoskey are possibilities after Traverse City if you travel north toward Mackinaw City. Lots of hiking in the area too.
