1 day here only- what to do? & Gluten free lunch options??

We are going to Petoskey, but returning rental car in Traverse City. I understand it is 1 - 1/2 hour drive. Need Gluten free lunch options near the airport. Any suggestions???

Should we try and spend the day in Traverse City? If so, what should we do?

Sorry, no gluten problems with us, but as far as activities, there are many options - certainly many more than in Petoskey, IMO - shopping, dining, wineries, museums, beaches, all kinds of day tours and trips, an excellent library system, water sports galore, horse riding, festivals and fairs, concerts, dancing, nearby dunes, parks, etc, etc. But it might be helpful for advice if you told us what sort of things you like to do, no?

We are visiting Friends in Petoskey, and have been there several times. We are only going to be in Traverse City a few hours. We love sight seeing, beaches, shopping. Really all things you mentioned! Unfortunately, our time is limited. Maybe lunch near shopping and then a quick look at the beach area for future visits?

It should be easy to have a good afternoon. The downtown district is a real treat, with interesting stores and several fine restaurants. Lots of options for both. To get here from P, you will be driving right along the lake, so you will see what we have to offer. You will pass several parks where you can pull off if you want, and the downtown is just a block off the bay. You will also pass through two special towns - first Charlevoix, then Elk Rapids, roughly one third and two thirds of the way. They too have lots of water frontage, parks, stores, and restaurants - but you might have to save them for a different trip. Of course, the nicer the weather, the more enjoyable things will probably turn out for you. Good luck!

Not saying this would be my first choice for dining in Traverse City, but I'm aware Red Mesa (Mexican) has an actual "celiac safe" menu. See it on their website--

Otherwise search Yelp Traverse City, using the term "gluten-free." Note however that Slabtown does not seem to be offering a gluten-free burger any longer.

A quick search with "gluten free menus traverse city' shows quite a few choices. If you're walking around downtown, I'd recommend Poppycock's or Amical - both very good spots, a couple of blocks apart.....Amical is next to the State theater, Poppycock's at the other end, and on the opposite side of the street.

And Zakey's in between, if you want to go middle-eastern...

Not sure if you've already been here since this was posted last week, but I'd recommend that you go into downtown TC for lunch as others have suggested. Good options for a GF lunch would be The Towne Plaza (my personal favorite), Red Ginger, Amical or The Dish (for something more casual, salads are the only GF option here but they are good) or there's also the new OM Cafe which is vegetarian and lists GF options on the menu. It is only a 10 min drive from downtown to the airport...there aren't too many decent restaurants right by the airport. After lunch you might have time to stroll downtown and do a little shopping or take a walk along the water.
