South Haven during Winter Break?

i got a coupla week-days off in late dec, just after x-mas, then a coupla days over new years.... i discovered the covered garage structure in one of our recent visits doubles as an ice rink in winter... is the town happening during winter break, or is it asleep? also, what about st joe? thinking of doing a short jaunt over that way, maybe with some xc skiing thrown in for good measure (weather permitting).....

thanks!

ST, South Haven is still pretty much open during your times and a lot of fun. They are hanging the lights and big snow flakes at the pavilion as we type. It's a nice rink with skate rental or bring your own. They even have the ability to sharpen skates if yours have been hanging in the garage since last millennium .

Most of the nicer restaurants are open year around. Most stores are open thru the first week of January (Christmas gift returns and swaps etc), after that things will quiet down till Ice Breakers, festival weekend in February that is a lot of fun.

Now the "wild card" ! South Haven embarked on a big project this fall and will not be completed till spring. Its ahead of schedule but its hard to say at what point they'll be over the holidays. Phoenix St., the main road headed east and west downtown is being completely replaced with all new infrastructure. The stretch from Broadway to the traffic island is nearly complete. From the traffic island to Kalamazoo St. they have either removed or are in process of removing all pavement and sidewalks. If they follow the process they'll probably pour sidewalks first and that will allow pedestrians easy access to all the stores.

When this project is finished it will really propel the downtown into a new age.

BTW MDOT was going to close and completely overhaul the drawbridge this winter but because of a bidding snafu they have rescheduled that project till next fall.

I really don't get down there much. Tosi's restaurant is very festive during the holidays and is my favorite restaurant around. We're going this Saturday. http://www.tosis.com/

Just about all restaurants are open all year long in St Joe. XCountry skiing can happen at Sarrett Nature Preserve north of town. There is also an ice skating pavilion on Napier Rd just off Niles. The downtown will still look festive. and Probably the snowman public art will be back ( like those trains and planes form the summer) Curious Kids Museum and the Carousel will all be open -- not to mention Silver Beach Pizza! HA! What more can you hope for!

I've come up many times during winter break and it is gorgeous...the skating is fun, kal haven trail is open, as are most of the things in town...this construction thing, however sounds like a nightmare!
