Fishing Spots in South Haven

We are camping in Van Buren State Park in mid-July. This is our 2nd trip, we camped here last year too and LOVED South Haven! We did not fish last year but really want to this year. Where can we fish from? Can we fish off the state park beach? Where can we get fishing licenses? Any info would be much appreciated! Thanks so much!

So glad that you enjoy the South Haven area and VBSP.

To answer your questions:

1) You can fish from anywhere, there are no restricted areas, except for the area around the power plant. That area is restricted and clearly marked. That being said, you won't be very successful fishing from shore near or off the park this time of year. Early Spring is pretty much the only time that steelhead or salmon are close to shore.

2) You can fish off of either pier in South Haven. It would be possible to catch several species of fish this time of year.

3) You can buy fishing licenses at Wal Mart, but I would suggest going to Pyle's Porthole and getting your license. Adam or Cathy will have up to date fishing reports and would be able to steer you in the right direction as to what bait or lures you would need to have. Here is the link to their website: http://www.pylesporthole.com/

4) Fishing licenses will be required for anyone over the age of 16.

5) There are also several charter boats in South Haven that can take you out fishing for "big" fish such as Lake Trout and Salmon.

Good luck and welcome back to SH!
