Oval Beach swimming

Was wondering if there are any rip tide or drop-off concerns while swimming at Oval beach.

I've not been swimming at the Oval this year. For the most part Lake Michigan gets deeper gradually, usually followed by a sand bar where it can get quite shallow again and then gets deeper. Its not uncommon to see people waist deep quite a ways off shore. The water may be over your head in between them and the shore.

Lake Michigan should always be respected and yes there can be rip tides, if conditions are right, usually when its very rough like yesterday. We've had a drowning this year in SH due to water current around the piers. A few years ago several people drowned in the Warren Dunes area all on the same day, I think six people. Conditions were right yesterday, the waves were huge and close together, and the water was 80 degrees , everyone was in.

But at least there aren't any sharks : )

Yes, there can be rip tides, check the sign or ask the staff when you get to Oval Beach. Red flags mean no swimming! It's not like you can't tell when it's dangerous...really big waves generally mean a danger of rip tides.

There's a sand bar that does drop off...not hugely, but kids need to be aware of it...farther out, not far from the buoys.

Generally speaking, though, it's a safe beach. Have fun!
