Labor Day - MI beach towns?

Planning a last-minute getaway -- Labor Day weekend for 2 nights from Chicago. We'd like nice beaches, and good food -- pet peeve is overpriced, touristy, bad food. Would prefer somewhere a bit less crowded if possible. Realize that may not be possible this weekend. Do you recommend Saugatuck, St Joseph, New Buffalo, South Haven, or other ideas??? Thanks.

All beach towns will be crowded is you can guess. New Buffalo has boat rides, large casino and easy walk from downtown and beach. Saint Joseph is fantastic for kids with a kids museum, large water spray, Silver Beach, good pizza at the depot per Strange Tripper and many others (Chicago resident and frequent poster) and easy walk between downtown and beach. South Haven also has an easy walk connection. In fact, the only easily walked path from the south pier to the north pier. Historic boat rides and museum. Atv rides a bit out of town (rentals). Saugatuck has dune rides, hydro bikes, duck rides, boat rides, artsy downtown and a chain link ferry for walker access to the beach, but a bit further than the others. Holland has windmill island, public museum, lot of bike paths, and a lovely large beach via car or bike ride. Grand Haven is popular with the younger crowd and has a great downtown and walkway to the beach (south pier closed). Muskegon has a great free beach and piers. Not far away is an amusement park, inside water park and museums downtown. They do have a beach express bus. (not sure of hours). A bit further but very popular is Silver Dunes with large dune hills and dune rides and rentals. Plenty of rentals can be found at any one of the beach towns.
