Hi there

Helitours has flights 2-3 x per week. However be aware that Helitours, being the commercial wing of the airforce, has no normal commercial aviation license which means that Western travel insurances generally exclude anything happening on but also around such a flight.

Best alternate way is train; there is a reasonable daily connection (takes about 9 hours with 2 hours wait at Gal Oya) to Colombo.

All the best,

thanks a lot for your prompt response. Also, I am travelling towards May -end. Would it be worth doing the whale and dolphin watching in Trincomalee at this time?

Hi there,

Well we haven't yet read reports about whalewatching in Trinco here. Presumably it's as good as in winter season in Mirissa, but hopefully some others have more info.

All the best,

My hometown is Trincomalee, and I never heard anything about whale watching or dolphin watching till now. May be there is, but don't know. Your other easiest way to get to Colombo from Trinco is by bus. There are so many airconditioned coaches/busses that runs Trinco-Colombo everyday. It would take less time to travel compared to travelling by train as well. So check it out.

Good addition.

Here is some info on the whalewatching. The sites of the two hotels mentioned, Chaaya and Nilaveli beach, are also a source of info.

Trincomalee harbour is a breeding ground for sperm whales so it is possible to see them but I think I have heard breeding season is March time but I come from SA & there the whales are staying for longer then usual breeding season. Bus to colombo takes approx 7 hours there are 2 AC buses that go in the evening. If you go by train it takes a longer but a nice way to travel you can get a 1st class sleeper for 750 or reclining seat for Rs450.

No direct buses from Sigiriya. Buses bound for Trinco will pass Inamaluwa Junction and Dambulla.
