Milwaukee to Mackinaw Island, MI

Driving from Milwaukee to Mackinaw for the first time. Looking for attractions along the way. Restaurant and sites worth stopping for.

Staying at Mission Pt 2 nights. Good places to eat and attractions there as well.

Hello TKX,

What route are you taking to the island. North through the UP or down around Chicago and back up or both?

What dates and how long did you plan for your trip?

If you're doing this trip in one day, it takes about 7 hours. I would take M-35 to US-2 and follow the lake. Some beautiful views to stop and take in. Restaurants? Schloegel's in Menominee, on the Bay. http://www.tastefullydifferent.com/

We've stopped at Ford River Pub just west of Escanaba for great burgers. You could get pastie's along the way also. Or Clyde's in Manistique or St. Ignace. Great burgers too.

If you had time, drive down to Fayette..ghost town. Beautiful peninsula. Stop in Manistique and walk the boardwalk. Stop at Cut River Bridge just east of Epoufette. Pretty cool.

But really, just enjoy the views of Lake Michigan. Get out and walk out onto the dunes and beach west of St. Ignace. It's a beautiful drive.

Enjoy Mission Pt and Mackinac Island.

It's a good 7 hour drive. I would focus on getting to Mackinac City. Stopping anywhere for more than a snack or bathroom break means adding another day for the trip.

There are some short stops that can be made without adding too much time. Kitchitikipi, Big Spring wouldn't add too much, or a short walk on the boardwalk or out on the pier to the light at Manistique.

So you plan is to leave Wednesday morning and drive from Milwaukee to Mackinaw Island, spend Wednesday and Thursday night at Mission Point and then drive back from Mackinaw Island to Milwaukee on Friday?

If this is your plan you will not have much time for site seeing as RedRox has posted above. I live in Manistique and I do drive from Manistique to Milwaukee and it is a long drive.

why not take one of the ferries one of the ways? it'll cost some $$, but it will save you some driving, plus it's a nice, relaxing cruise across the Lake..... personally, i prefer the badger.....
