Macinaw city to Traverse city- good stops and things to see?

Travelling from macinaw city to traverse city. We aren't in a hurry and would like to see some of the highlights. We have 2 boys 6 and 8, so cool cool beaches are always a hit. The wife likes to check out quaint interesting little towns. Any suggestion for a good scenic drive and some good stops?

Travel over to 119 @ Cross Village and take the route along the Lakeshore. Very cool drive in amonsgt the tunnel of trees. That will take you through Harbor Springs, then follow US 31 south through Petoskey, Charelovoix and along Grand Traverse Bay to Traverse City.

All those towns are very interesting and some nice shops, restuarants and scenic areas along the way.

North of Cross Village, there are sand dunes and a nice sandy beach.

I agree with the previous posters. In Petoskey, your wife can shop in the Gaslight district while you take the boys down to the marina (a short walk away down a set of stairs that cross under US 31). There are some impressive boats in the marina and there are frequently fairs and festivals taking place. It's lots of fun for kids. Make sure you stop and spend some time in Charlevoix. You can take the boys to the beach at Lake Michigan while your wife shops in the quaint town just four blocks away. On Lake Michigan beach there are swing sets, slides, rest rooms and, most years, it is a great place to hunt for Petoskey stones. In town, make sure to take the boys to the drawbridge and watch it open every half hour on the hour and on the half hour. My kids always love watching the diverse range of boats cross the Pine River to Lake Michigan.

Traverse City is a lot of fun for families. I hope you have a chance to drive over to Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes with the kids. The public climb area is lots of fun and a great way to wear out energetic boys! You can follow it up with a swim at the Glen Haven Beach on Lake Michigan. This is a beautiful, clean beach with spectacular views. Dinner in Glen Arbor at Boone Docks (on the deck) is one of our favorite ways to end such a lovely day!

Have a great time! Moms

I can't even add anything, they said it all.

Get the planked whitefish at Boone Dock's-it is great! And if it is cold, (like today, again...) then get the hot choc-OMG-it was delicious. :)

thanks for the responses.

This is probaly a seperate thread, but we are planning a day trip from macinaw city and and debating between the falls/whitefish area and the soo locks. What do you suggest is more suitable for the 6 and 8 year old boys?

Falls, White Point. Stop and see the Pt Iroquis Lighthouse also on the way, if that is convenient, you can climb to the top. Be aware that it costs $12 to get into the museum at Whitefish Point-children may be less. There is a AAA discount of a $1-2 off the ticket if you have AAA. A lot of people get upset at that price for the small museum, but it is very meaningful to us MI residents. Also see all the buildings there for your money and the film, and walk on the beach and collect some rocks..

The Soo Locks are nice, but I think you boys would be much happier with the Falls. Have fun.
