Driving to Mackinac from the Twin cities MN

What is a good halfway point to spend the night if I'm driving from Minneapolis to Mackinaw ferry boarding?

The stretch along the half point doesn't offer as much in places to stay. Take a look at Escanaba, Michigan.

I would stay in Escanaba, Michigan because you want to make the drive along US 2 in the daytime. The shoreline drive is beautiful. If you didn't want to go across the bridge, you can board a ferry in St. Ignace.

We stayed in Escanaba, part of a trip that included Mackinaw Island, and Minneapolis, actually. Had a great time. One amazing thing is that, since Escanaba is in Michigan, they are on Eastern rather than Central Time. Sunset is very late. We were there on July 4 and they did not shoot off fireworks until about 11PM.

Another interesting option, if you are willing to pay the extra cost, is the ferry from Manitowoc, WI to Ludington, MI. You can take you car. It is about a 4 or 6 hour ride, and a nice way to relax. I don't know how far that would be from Minneapolis, maybe 6 hours? You could plan on staying on either side of the lake. From Ludington, you will be about 3 hours (?) to the Mackinaw ferry. It might be more costly than you would like. But if not, you take the ferry one way, then travel through the U.P. with your stop in Escanaba the other way.
