Driving from Detroit to Milwaukee

Two of us will be heading to Milwaukee and beyond in November and wanted to know the best scenic route to travel ? Do I go via Chicago up to Milwaukee or cross at Muskegon and then down to the Windy City ? Also how often does the car ferry run and at what cost ? Any advice would be appreciated , Cheers , Skeney57.

Ferry info: http://www.lake-express.com/

For two adults and a vehicle, you are looking at $275 one way. It really does not save any time, but does let someone else do the driving for a few hours. It runs twice a day during the summer I believe.

Fastest route would be I-94 through Chicago - 20 minutes faster than the ferry per Google maps. Most scenic would be going through the UP - but that is 12 hours instead of six.

The Lake Express Ferry between Milwaukee and Muskegeon only operates April through October.

Depending on when you're traveling in November, you should also be prepared for bad weather. While it won't be terrible, you may encounter some light snow or ice.

Southwestern Michigan and Northwest Indiana also experience "lake effect snow" which means that 50 or 100 miles inland from the lake, the sun could be shining. However, as you get closer, you experience snow flurries that become a torrent along the shore. If you're not comfortable with winter driving, you may want to consider flying between Detroit and Chicago. Flights are plentiful and inexpensive.

Thanks Citylights !

You have cleared that one up beautifully. We are coming through mid-november on our way eventually to Denver Co so it looks like its the road all the way. Not a big fan of snow driving but did around 4000mls over a lot in Jan 2011 during the big freeze !!!

Many thanks !
