Mobility Scooters on Island?

We have recently purchased a mobilty scooter for hubby due to mobility issues from Multiple sclerosis. The last time we were there, he had great difficulty getting around and did not enjoy our time there due to this. Some where, we heard something about a man, his mobility scooter and think it was something about not allowing his mobility scooter on the island.

Can anyone enlighten us if mobility scooters are allowed on the island? He has a permanent handicapped parking permit and we can obtain a letter from the family doctor and/or neurologist if needed.

THANKS if advance for any assistance you can give us!!

Mobility scooters are most certainly allowed on the island! In fact, a friend who lives on the island recently had guests, one of which has limited ability to walk. This was his first visit to the island with his new scooter and what a difference it made.

Here's a link to the first of several blog posts she wrote about their ventures around the island: …wordpress.com/2011/…

If you look at the posts that follow (by date), you'll also see some great places to visit on the island!

Have a great trip!

The Island limits the powered transport for persons with disabilites to electric wheelchairs and Amigo style scooters. If you aren't sure about the style of scooter that your husband has, call the Mackinac Island Police Department (906) 847-330.

Yes, they are allowed. We took my father a few years back and he had no difficulty getting around and it was his first time out with his Scooter. We had no one even give us a second look, and we asked ahead of time about this. Now some of the sidewalks are difficult to get up on and he had to use the "road" and that wasn't always convenient or safe. Otherwise, you should encounter no problems.

THANK YOU ALL!!!

As the scooter is one of the smaller styles that folds up and fits in a car trunk, I do not believe there should be any issues with it knowing that they ARE allowed. Maybe now I can talk him into a revisit to the island!!! There is so much more that I'd like to see and venture through.
