When? Getting a room on the island might be tough at this late date in the summer season.

You are hitting the peak. I don't think you can stay on the island without spending a lot of money.

You could save some money, by staying in St. Ignace or Mackinaw City and day tripping.

A good place to compare prices is http://www.mackinawcity.com/sleep-36/ But I would start with the Lamplighter Motel ASAP.

Here is a special from Travelzoo for $129. per night on the island, with breakfast included and discount on boat ride over.

Hope it helps!

That price is for after Labor Day at the The Island House Hotel , but the same web site is offering $179 in late August.

We just got back from 1-1/2 days in the City, 2-1/2 days on the Island. We stayed at the Clarion on the beach -- probably wouldn't go there again. There are quite a few places in the City to stay at -- if you don't "need" to be on the beach, there are cute B&Bs and hotels off the beach on N & S Huron.

Check out the map at: http://www.mackinaw-city.com

or http://www.mackinawcity.com/

That way you get a feel for where the accomodations are & you can compare right online. I would avoid the major chains -- the smaller hotels/motels looked really well kept. I would avoid the ones "at the bridge" because they are right on the highway. The Court Plaza is adjacent to the shopping area so you would never need to move your car.

To check out the Island, go to: http://www.mackinac.com/

We stayed at Mission Point Resort, but were lucky enough to get an $89/night rate through Travelzoo. (A website I always recommend checking)

Also -- check out the ferry company websites for discounts on 2 adult tix before going. Purchase online & save time when you are there. We used Sheplers and got a tix for our 10 yr. old for $0; paid $15 for 2 nights overnight parking & valet car service. Was completely worth the $15. Have NO complaints about Shepler's service.

Good luck & have fun!

We just returned from the Island this week after spending 3 days there. We (wife and 3 teenagers) stayed at Mission Point Resort ( I have a review pending and do not encourage anybody to stay there). We enjoyed the horseback riding and the carriage tour of the island. Be prepared to walk a lot. It seems that everything is uphill. And be prepared that all the hotels do not have air conditioning. There are plenty of shops and restaurants that do. We also rented bikes and rode around the island, the boys had fun with that and I do believe they also rented babystrollers for the bikes. Let me know if you have any other questions.
