Ferries to the island?

Do you need to make reservations to get to the island on a Ferry in July, or do you just show up and hitch a ride? We are staying over one day on the island and don't know when we would arrive or leave the island... unless we have to make reservations.

You buy tickets when you arrive, the ferries are running all day back and forth. If you can get a schedule it will tell you the first boat and the all important last boat times!

As a side note you may see places to buy ferry tickets as soon as you hit Mackinac City. Don't stop right away. Check out the three options before you buy. Note that we've used all three and have settled on the Arnold Line. They are fast, friendly and the smoothest ride if the weather turns a little rough.

We've never bought tickets ahead of time in the 30 years we've been going to Mackinac Island. I believe it's always a first come, first serve ride. You'll find that the ferries run about every 30 minutes and there are 3 different companies. Maybe the Arnold Line, Starr Line or Shepplers would have a web site that would clarify this point more.

Note: If you want a good view of the bridge set on the left side of the ferry. You also get to see much of the city as you arrive at the island.
