cheapest flights to Kalamazoo

We're planning to attend a wedding in Kalamazoo next June. Can anyone tell us the best way to get there from Boston? Would it be better to fly in to Detroit or Chicago (O'Hare or Midway) and rent a car? We have already ruled out flying into Kalamazoo because of cost, and are leaning toward spending some hours in Chicago just because we've never been there before.

Thanks,

Kalamazoo is almost exactly the half way point for Chicago and Detroit. I'd say Chicago's traffic from the airport is worse than Detroits because Detroit's airport is not actually in the city, it is west of it in Romulus. I'd go with the cheaper price of the two. Time wise its basically a wash although Detroit is a little closer and has less traffic. You should also check and see how much fares are to Lansing as its only about an hour drive to Kzoo from there.

If the wedding is not until June I would not book yet. Wait until March or April.

You also might want to think about checking fares from Manchester NH or Providence RI as Southwest flies to those cities and has a hub at Chicago Midway. You might be able to get a cheap flight if you can book right when they open sales for your dates.

Closer arrival cities to consider are Grand Rapids (GRR ~60 miles) and South Bend IN (SBN ~80 miles).

Hello Holly, Another thing to look at would be to fly to Chicago and take Amtrak (train) to Kalamazoo. Amtrak stops in Kalamazoo. It looks like it would cost you $18 one way per person or $36 round trip. It takes 2 hours 40 minutes to go from Chicago to Kalamazoo.

Here is a web page that explains how to get from either O'Hare or Midway Airport to Amtrak Union Station.

Thanks, Yooperbacker,

Does Kalamazoo have a decent transit system? We don't want to impose on the relatives for transportation too much.

Holly2222,

Yes there is a bus system but Kalamazoo has a lot of surrounding areas also. Depending on exactly where you need to go the bus system may not take you all the way. Parchment, parts of Portage, and other surrounding areas that are generally referred to as Kalamazoo often times are not on the bus route. There are lots of cabs and they are relatively cheap by Michigan standards due to it being a college town.

You might also check out flying into Lansing or Grand Rapids. They're closer and might have decent airfare. Also, if you're coming in for a weekend, I've found that Enterprise rent a car has great rates. They will pick you up and drop you back off at your hotel.

A couple of things to remember when you are talking about flying into either Chicago or Detroit, then driving to Kalamazoo. Kalamazoo is just about exactly half way between downtown Chicago and downtown Detroit. However Chicago O'Hare (ORD) is 20 miles west of downtown Chicago and you will have to drive through downtown Chicago to get to Kalamazoo - figure on about 3 hours. Detroit Metro (DTW) is 25 miles west of downtown Detroit and as you leave the airport you will be traveling away from downtown - figure on about 2 hours.

In addition to what was already said, I would think Detroit way over Chicago. After DTW, you have Lansing, Grand Rapids, or Flint. Flint is two hours away, but is on Airtran routes and Northwest. It is a nice airport. Depending just how independant you want to really be, you may want o rent a car with unlimited miles. Maybe Fort Wayne, Indiana too as an option. Have to do some research but I'm betting DTW is your best bet over all and renting an car.

AMTRAK is a good suggestion if you end up in Chicago, but thats still a pretty big deal getting from the airport (either one) to Union Station, and then finding public transportation in Kalamazoo. Seems like alot of work to save a few bucks. Still, There are several trains that run thru Kalamazoo. once you arrive at the train station, you will have to decide if its worth it (without a car) and relying on public transportation.
