The NFL has enacted new, and rather strict, security rules at all stadiums this year. They claim it is to increase security, I personally believe it has much more to do with making sure you buy their overpriced concessions. Purses and bags are not allowed, except for a one gallon max size clear bag (which they happen to sell).

There is parking all over downtown. The closer you are to Ford Field, the more expensive it will be. I typically park in Greektown and either walk or take a free bar shuttle. Most parking is surface lots, but even "secure" parking decks are not all that secure. Keep all valuables out of sight and you should not have a problem.

On top of tev's input, I'll suggest to bring some cash! Prices for parking on game days can run any where from $20 - $50, depending on how close you want to park. Also, prices for food and beverages are insanely inflated inside the stadium. When my husband and I go, we typically get pizza and pop and it's about $35 for the two of us to eat!

Prices aside, Ford Field is awesome and you'll have a great time. Also, don't worry about being in Detroit. When the Lions are home there are easily 100,000+ people roaming the streets (not to mention a high police presence) surrounding the stadium so you'll be more than safe. Enjoy!

Definitely eat before the game if you can - and farther from the stadium will be cheaper (just like parking). I find the Elwood, Cheli's, Hockeytown, etc. to have inflated prices compared to the places in Greektown or Bricktown.

Just as an aside, there will be new local food and beverage options inside Ford Field for the upcoming Lions Season. Not to say it's any kind of a bargain, but at least it will be there.

Slow's, Russell St Deli and Corridor Sausage, along with cocktails from Sugar House are the ones I'm aware of. I don't know how accessible they'll be-- is North Club Level open to everyone?

Here's an article about them--

And a photo of Corridor's menu board there--

... and here's the menu from their Grindhouse food truck--

So there you have the price premium for in-stadium food, at least from this vendor.

Corridor's sausages are wonderful. Too bad they're not selling my favorites (fig!) at Ford Field.
