Doubletree or Crowne Plaza closest to Joe Louis Arena?

Okay, I'm narrowing down my final choices. For walking distance only, which is the closest hotel to Joe Louis Arena - The Doubletree on West Lafayette or the Crowne Plaza on Washington Blvd? Thanks in advance for any help. Google Maps doesn't always tell you everything you need to know. :)

They really are about the same distance. I hadn't heard the crowne plaza had opened yet. If it has, everything would be newly remodeled. The crowne plaza will be closer to the river too. Just to throw you a loop, you might like a hotel closer to comerica park, or greektown. The area is more lively and built up. And you could just hop on the people mover to get to joe Louis.

The Crowne Plaza on Washington Boulevard is stil being remodeled and rebranded from its former operator's name. It will open for guests on July 19.

Thanks for the replies! I'll be in Detroit in October for five days so the Crowne Plaza should hopefully be open by then. I won't be renting a car, and the People Mover would be fine for the trips to or from the Arena, but not the return trip since I understand it runs in only one direction so I'd have to do the whole loop 50% of the time if I use it both coming and going. I'll be traveling to and from the Arena every day multiple times a day for the event going on there, which is all day long, so there will be lots of traveling back and forth. I was just trying to shorten the total miles a bit by knowing which hotel was truly closest if you were walking. But if they are just about the same, then I won't use that as my criteria.

Honestly, even if you do the entire loop, it only takes a few minutes. Just an FYI

I looked at this again. Because of the freeway, you can't cross right by the Arena... So in that case I think you're better off with the crowne plaza. I will be downtown next week and ill double check for you. The crowne plaza is the old pontchitrain hotel, and its right across from Cobo hall. Looks like that's where you would have to cross the street.

The people mover will probably save you a few minutes no matter where you stay downtown. While you do have to do the entire loop, it is only 2.9 miles. It also drops you at concourse level which saves you having to climb several stories of stairs. The entrances are a bit confusing to reach on foot - the Jefferson side has the merging of Jefferson and the Lodge freeway which goes under Cobo Hall next door. I believe there is a pedestrian walkway by Third street over the freeway. For the river entrance you have to go around Cobo Hall and Cobo Arena. The people mover will also keep you dry if the weather is nasty. If you were to stay at Greektown casino you would never even have to go outside since there is a people mover stop attached and they have free indoor parking. It is also in the center of everything.

An additional bit of info...the Doubletree has a shuttle which will take you to the Joe, at least, and I think they will pick you up also?

I was downtown yesterday. I like to location of the crowne plaza better. A friend of mine had the opportunity to go inside and was very impressed. It's right across the street from cobo hall.. Which you can walk thru to get to The Joe, as we call it. But I think you would be happy with either. Both are newly renovated, the doubletree in a older building more characteristic of detroit's glory days.. The crowne plaza was built in the early 60's. hope you have a nice stay downtown. The city is really coming around!
