Best Hotel/Area to stay in Detroit

Hey guys,

I need to travel to Detroit for a meeting in mid August. What are the best (read: safest) areas to stay? The meeting is at Wayne State University. I was thinking downtown because it's close to the university, but cost is a little high there.

If it makes a difference, I was hoping to stay at a Marriott run hotel. Thoughts?

Downtown and Marriott means either the Courtyard or Marriott Ren Cen. Don't forget to add $15-$20 a day in parking to the daily rate. The hotels in the suburbs will have free self parking most likely.

Dearborn just to the west has several Marriott run hotels from your basic Residence up through the more luxury.

There is also a Residence just off I-75 in Madison Heights that puts you 15-20 minutes from Wayne State. There is also a collection of the extended stay and lower end near the GM Tech Center in Warren, probably 20-30 minutes away.

All are in safe areas (I live in Warren). I would base your decision on price and how long you want to drive. You can find reviews here, but a Courtyard is basically a Courtyard most anywhere you go. Dearborn is probably your best distance/price compromise.

Thanks for your reply!

How bad is the rush hour traffic between in Detroit? Unless the cost savings is significant, this will make a difference on whether I stay downtown or make the commute.

Warren to WSU in rush hour is probably 45 minutes. Check out Greektown Casino hotel. Good area, probably $99 per night.

Check out the Inn on Ferry Street. Sometimes you can get really great rates. I think its super cute and quaint. Its very close to where you need to be. I stayed there about a year ago and had a great experiance.
