Vacationing in L'anse wht to do

Next month we will be vacationing in the L'Anse Baraga County area. I was just wondering if anyone has some advice on what we should do. Also where are some good places to eat. We have five kids 1-17 so I wanted to know where we should take them that would be unforgetable. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't much about Baraga except there is a casino resort there. I know it is in the northern part of the UP and to be honest there isn't much up there. I think the town only has around 1,000 or so people. You're probably not far from Marquette or Houghton. Both of those cities should have some restaurants. Maybe somebody else can help out.

You are kind of between Houghton and Marquette. Either would be a nice day trip. Both are college towns and offer the usual college town atmoshpere.

A trip to Copper Harbor might be worthwhile at the top of the Keweenaw and a visit to Fort Wilkins.

As for places to eat. In Houghton I like the Ambassador. In Marquette I like the Vierling.

As already pointed out there is a casino in Baraga if you are interested in that.

There is not a whole lot to do in L'Anse or Baraga. There is a swimming area at Baraga State Park and a little downtown in L'Anse to shop in. Otherwise, you'll have to drive further out to find some more interesting attractions. Pictured Rocks or Copper Harbor would be worth a day trip, if you don't mind driving more.

One restaurant in L'Anse that is good is Hilltop. It's not fancy, but it is tasty. You could get a couple sweet rolls to go. They are fantastic! Probably 3 of them would feed your whole group!

Hope you have a great trip!

Hello scifity,

One plus about being in the L'Anse area is the gas prices. Baraga usually has one of the lowest gas prices in the UP. So if you travel anywhere fill up in Baraga before you go.

You might like to check out the Henry Ford buildings just East of L'Anse.

If you travel further north to the Keweenaw Pennisula there are many things to do. That's Copper Country and the Qunicy Mine Tour is in Hancock across the river from Houghton. Nice beaches that follow Lake Superior take your pick north of Gay on the East side or Eagle River/ Harbor on the west side. In Copper harbor you can rent kayaks, bikes etc. Between Houghton Hancock and Copper Harbor check out Calumet a old mining town.

I would eat at Quincy's in Dollar Bay, Michigan House in Calumet and several good restuarants in Copper Harbor.

A neat drive outside of Copper Harbor is Brockway Mtn. road. Be sure to stop great views of the hills and Lake Superior.

Great area in the summer but the snowmobiling in the winter is awesome.

I think there are a number of waterfalls in the area, you might want to check that out with the local chamber of commerce in either town.

There is the Father Baraga shrine. It is free (last time we were there) and though it doesn't offer a whole lot, there is the huge statue (?) of him, some pretty grounds (you can have a picnic here), and some MI history. My now grown son saw that shrine of Father Baraga at 2, and he said, "That is one big Jesus." It was very funny.....lol. I 2nd a trip up to Copper Harbor; or down to the Porcupine Mountains for a day trip.
