Waltham to Provincetown

We are planning to make a day trip from Waltham to Provincetown on either the last sat or sun of Sep. Will the drive be difficult? Windy roads? I understand it takes abt 2-3 hours to get there, depending on traffic. Could someone also suggest an itinerary (which towns to stop en route)? Thanks!

The fastest way is to go on Routes 128 and 95 South (128 is old name for this circular route). Staying on the same road, it will become 128 South and 93 North (believe it or not). Then take Route 3 South towards Cape Cod. After the Cape Cod Canal and Sagamore Bridge, the road becomes Route 6 North and goes eventually to Provincetown.

If you're interesting in stopping somewhere, Plymouth is right on the way.

It's not a difficult ride. Once you get onto Rte three, it's a 'minor highway' (2-3 lanes on each side of a divider). Then you cross the bridge and it's Rte 6 all the way. At first Rte 6 a divided highway, 2 lanes in each direction. Then it still remains divided, but only one lane in each direction. Once you hit Orleans, Rte 6 no longer has a divider in the middle and it varies form 2 to 4 lanes total. At this point the speed limit drops and you need to be aware that people slow down or stop to take left turns ... but it's really not a difficult drive.

As for stops ...

Stop by the canal in Sagamore to stretch your legs and have a very casual meal at Seafood Sam's or the Sagamore Inn (it's a restaurant, not an inn ;) ).

Sandwich is an interesting place ... old grist mill, colonial houses, etc.

Eastham is part of the Cape Cod National Seashore (national park) where you can get info about beaches, nature and history of the area. There's some great beaches and walking trails.

You could also stop in the town of Sandwich. Take exit 2 once you cross the bridge. Take a left off the exit and follow this to The Daniel Webster Inn. Great place to stop but so are all the others.

There are a few nice shops to stopp off at before the Inn. Antique and Glass I believe.
