Low Key Portland Day Trip

We'll have a day in Portland in early October as the 1st stop of a cruise. We've been to Portland before, love the area, but would like to keep this low key and relaxing. Last trip we noticed all the inter-island ferries leaving from very close to the cruise ship pier. Would hopping on one of them make an interesting day trip? If so, which island/islands would you recommend, including a stop for a nice lunch? We have somewhat limited mobility so don't want strenuous hiking; we're mostly interested in just getting off the beaten track, absorbing gorgeous scenery, getting a few great photos, maybe a lobster roll and a slice of blueberry pie!

A Casco Bay Island Ferry would definitely make a good, laid-back, scenic activity for your day in port -- several restaurants on Peaks Island, but I'm not sure about their hours in October.... might pick one or two from the list here on Trip Advisor and give them a call or e-mail to make sure they'll still be open. Another good alternative would be lunch somewhere on the Portland waterfront and then a Casco Bay Island Transit District mailboat run -- they literally deliver mail, freight and passengers to several of the harbor islands, but you wouldn't have to get off the boat and could still get a waterside view of several different islands....
