Anyone have any tips and locales for viewing?

You'd first have to find out when they might be happening. (They're created by sun spot/solar flare activity, and can be forecast.) Perhaps check an astronomer's site or NASA. I saw them a few years ago from my back porch in the Portland area, and there had been plenty of notice in the media about them occurring then (a very unusual event in Southern Maine.) The further north you go, the better the odds (think Arctic Circle.)
