sailing in maine

We are planning a holiday in Maine and New England in August and would like to spend a few days sailing preferably around the Casco Bay area. We are looking to charter a sailing boat without a skipper. We have only found very expensive options with very old boats (1970ies or 80ies the newest).

Does anybody know which company does bareboat charters with new boats at reasonable price? Casco Bay seems ideal for sailing and although there are many options to go on a shooner with a group and a skipper this is not what we are looking for.

In case the sailing option would prove difficult we would rent a cottage and try and hire a small boat with an outboard engine and would look for suggestions. Are they easier to find?

Thank you very much

Not being a sailing person, I cannot give you good specific names of places. But I did a quick Google Search for <sailboat rental maine> and came up with a number of hits worth exploring. Maybe you already did this. I did not follow a lot of them, or dig into any of them deeply, so I don't know if they will meet your needs. I found that a number of the hits were based in the Penobscot and Acadia/Bar Harbor areas, rather than Portland.

Anyway, these might provide a starting point. If you contact some of them, they might be able to point you in the right direction. You also might try contacting and Googling the Portland Chamber of Commerce.

Yes we did google... Not in Acadia, but we will try. I thought that it would be rather cold as it is near Canada, but it is worth trying.

Thank you

Acadia will be fine in August. Not appreciably different from Portland. You might want to focus your search on Camden, as well. Maybe Boothbay Harbor, Bath.

Hi bops,

Being someone who has cruised a huge portion of the Maine coast along with the MA coast (including the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket), I'd highly recommend chartering a boat out of the Penobscot Bay or Acadia area. It has the most beautiful cruising grounds and most likely will have a good choice of bare boat rentals.

And if you really want to splurge, charter a boat from Hinckley Yacht Charters (www.hinckleyyachtcharters.com) out of Southwest Harbor and you won't be disappointed! Just be prepared to spend big bucks :).

Also check out www.pointseast.com and www.mainboats.com which most likely will offer links to charter companies.

Just know that the tide changes in Maine are huge; the fog can roll in before you can blink an eye and you won't be able to see a thing beyond your hand; and the wind can go from calm to howling with a summer squall in no time flat. Not trying to scare you, just giving you a head's up so you don't get caught off-guard.

Good luck and let us know how you make out :).

I am also planning a trip to the Casco Bay area this summer and am also looking for a bareboat charter for few days at a not-too-expensive rate. Did you have any luck.

Thank you,

Thank you very much for all the suggestions. Sorry I was away for a few days and could not access a computer. I have found a company that does charters in Rockland, Maine and they seem to have newish boats and reasonable rates. If anyone is interested here it is:

Thank you again
