Costal towns to visit near Portland

We are SO excited to visit Maine next week for the first time. We will be staying in Portland for 5 nights before heading to mid-coast, and would like to explore a few of the southern beach towns. Will have our 1 year old and a 3 year old with us.

Which towns are worth a visit with our kids?

Thank you!

For beaches I would visit Crescent Beach and Two Lights State Park, just 20 mins from your hotel. Higgins Beach in Scarborough is an easy drive as well. Old Orchard Beach is a miles-long stretch about a half hour from Portland, it's the Coney Island of Maine with ferris wheels/ French fries....you get the picture. If Old Orchard sounds a little too crazy with kids that age, head just south of Old Orchard to Ocean Park....same stretch of beautiful beach but a bit quieter.

Here in New Jersey many towns have boardwalks and a ton of amusement rides and piers with many attractions, It's hard to believe but Old Orchard Beach is the only New England town with such a pier.

My guess about why only one amusement pier in Maine is because the early vacationers to Maine, called Rusticators, not only wanted to get away from the city heat in the summer but also to leave behind all that hustle and bustle of the Jersey shore.

Well that, and the fact that New Jersey has 10 times the population of Maine.

I love Maine that wasn't meant as a criticism. I spent several summers at a camp on Crystal Lake in Dry Mills Maine and every year we had a camp trip to Old Orchard Beach and for campers as we got older a night camp at the base of Mt. Washington before climbing to the summit and back the next day.

With the original poster mentioning young children I thought that nearby Old Orchard Beach would be a place his family would enjoy as there are some amusement rides there for kids.
