This Columus day weekend

Considering flying into Portland second weekend in Oct Very cheap flights from Phia and then heading south to some small beach towns to explore ,shop and eat lobster for 3-4 days .

Will we need reservations or can we just wing it ..Any towns that should be on our "must" list .Any suggestions for restaurants and lodging ..Hope to just land in Portland ,rent a car and head south .

You should be able to wing it at that time of year. You might want to swing a little north to hit Freeport before you head south of Portland. LLBean and other good shopping in Freeport. Freeport is only 15 minutes north of Portland -- easy on and off of I-95.

South of Portland you will want to see Old Orchard Beach, Ogunquit, Kennebunkport, York, and Kittery.

Don't know the restaurants south of Portland. But a good place for lunch or dinner in Freeport would be Azure Cafe.

Should not need reservations for that time of year.

Towns I would suggest not to miss are Kennybunkport, Oqunquit and.Freeport.

York in my opinion is just ok and kittery is for shopping since they have many outlet stores.

Places to stay, to name a few in Ogunquit that are nice, and all In the village.

Sparhawk

Anchorage

Beachmere

Seacastles

Sea Chambers

The Terrace

A short distance out of town but very walk able.

Meadowmere

Juniper Hill

We love York Harbor, a very different part of "The Yorks"!

Even for that weekend the better places could be booked. And the smaller and cheaper rooms go first. Milestone and Juniper Hills are nice and large enough to have rooms available. Anchorage is prime location but big enough to have rooms. Probably the higher price ones. Sparhawk does only reservations which have to be submitted as of Oct. 2010. We have stayed many times that weekend and had to make reservations at the better places. If location is not important you can find some on Route 1. There is a new Hampton Inn on Route 1. But if you want to be in the area of Ogunquit Village, call ahead to check. Its the last busy weekend up there. Must eat at the Steak House on Rt. 1 in Wells. Been through the coast from Hampton to Bar Harbor. Love Ogunquit & Bar Harbor. We do Ogunquit twice a year. Shore Rd. is a nice ride from Ogunquit to York.. Everyone has lobster on the menu. Have a good trip.
