Looking for Lake Cabin/Cottage in Maine

We are a family of four with 2 adult sons ages18 & 21 and are looking for a lake cabin in late August. We'd like to canoe, kayak, hike, and fish but would also like internet and TV access. In addition we'd like to be close to a town for a couple of restaurant meals. I've heard & read much about Moosehead Lake but are there other great choices closer to the southern border? Locations and cabins/cottages recommendations? Thanks!

You might want to consider a rental somewhere on the Belgrade Lakes chain in Central Maine -- would save you about 100 miles and two hours of driving time (one way) compared to going to Moosehead (which is also a great destination if you don't mind the drive). The Belgrades are a chain of lakes that wend through Central Maine... most of them are 15-20 minutes from both Augusta and Waterville (good-sized communities with decent shopping and restaurant choices). The Belgrades offer great opportunities to canoe/kayak/fish (either on the lakes themselves or on the streams that feed into them) and there is decent hiking nearby in the Kennebec Highlands area of the Kennebec Land Trust properties. You'd also be about an hour's driving distance from Maine's western mountains if you wanted to hike there, or an hour from the mid-coast if you wanted to visit the coastal area for a day. The vast majority of the lakeside rentals are privately owned properties, so Internet and decent TV access would depend on what the owner has had installed....but those items would be listed in most rental descriptions. The majority of the rentals in the Belgrades are handled by local rental listing agencies (owners would rather let them handle the rental details than do it themselves). Googling Belgrade Lakes Maine Cottage Rentals will give you a list of several local agencies. We've had good personal experiences in the past with rentals through Day's Real Estate/Belgrade Rental Reservations and their website includes photos and detailed descriptions of the properties they manage, plus an "availability" calendar for each property so you could see what's available for the time you're coming before contacting them for full rental details. Might work well given the criteria you've listed and would definitely save you driving time and mileage.

You could also check out the Rangeley Lakes region. There is a wide variety of accommodations as evidenced by this site:

Rangeley has restaurants, as do nearby towns like Oquossoc, Eustis and Stratton. You would have a pretty good chance of seeing a moose while in that region as well.
