Beaches near Boothbay Harbor

In 2006, maine123 wrote, "Had a great vacation in BBH last July and we are looking forward to returning this year. The only missing component to our trip was visiting a local beach, even if just for a few hours to have the kids go in the ocean and run around. Suggestions please. Thanks!" Boothbay Harbor has several lovely town public beaches at Barrett's Park that no respondent mentioned. You can view photos of families enjoying these beaches in the warm August 2009 summer at http://www.barrettspark.com/ There are a few subdivision beaches and private beaches nearby mentioned by respondents. Barrett’s Park is for everyone.

Driving Route 1 can "consume" too much of a short vacation making local planning a wise decision. There are several fine “Maine” beaches south of Portland but commuting from Boothbay Harbor would be wasteful of your limited vacation time.

Enjoy!

There are a couple of beaches in the Boothbay Harbor area. In addition to Barrett Park, there is the small beach at Grimes Cove at Ocean Pt and Hendricks Headlight on Southport Island.

To get to Ocean Pt., take route 96 south to the end and you'll be there. There is plenty of parking in a designated lot as well as along the shore. It's about a 10 or 15 minute drive from downtown BBH. Very pretty beach with views to open ocean and many islands.

The second beach is the one at Hendricks Headlight on Southport Island. Again, its a small beach but has wonderful views of the lighthouse. There is even a small island that kids can swim or walk out to pending what the tide is doing. Reach this beach by taking route 27 south, over the swing bridge onto Southport Island. Take the right at the Southport General Store onto Beach Rd. Follow to end and there's the beach and parking. It will take you about 15 minutes or so to drive there.

Keep in mind both beaches are best at mid to low tide, are both rocky and sandy and are small. But they're perfect for young kids and those who just like to wade and swim and are not looking for big wave action.

For traditional beaches, there is Popham and Reid State Park. These are about a 45 to 50 minute drive south of BBH, off of route 1 near the towns of Bath and Brunswick, down peninsula's. Google for directions.

Both of the above beaches are beautiful, very sandy with some dunes, have public restrooms and snackbars, good sized waves, are large and have awesome views. There is a charge for parking at both.

Enjoy!
