Towns/places to visit besides Acadia and Bar Harbor?

Hello! We will be visiting Maine in early October. Obviously, Acadia and the town of Bar Harbor are on the list of places to visit. I was wondering if anyone could give any recommendations of any other small towns or places to visit while there? And "must-do" things in Acadia park? Thanks in advance!!

How long is your total visit? What are your interests? So much to see and do throughout Maine. With a little more information, I’m sure you will get many suggestion:)

Without changing your lodging near Acadia, you could visit Southwest Harbor, Northeast Harbor, Somesville, and Seal Harbor -- all right on Mount Desert Island and surrounded by Acadia National Park. You can take a ferry from Northeast Harbor out to Great and Little Cranberry Islands. The Isleford Dock serves meals on Little Cranberry. Unlike some of the islands off the coast of Maine, Little Cranberry Island is not a rich person's summer colony. Working lobstermen live out there.

Within easy day trip distance you could also visit Blue Hill and then Stonington, out on Deer Isle. You could take a mail boat from Stonington out to Isle au Haut, half of which is owned by Acadia National Park. On the way back to Mount Desert Island you could detour a bit to see the Penobscot Narrows Bridge which has an observatory high atop one of the bridge abutments -- great view of fall foliage.

In day trip distance, in the other direction, you could drive Down East to Machias, Lubec, and Eastport. You will see the dramatic tides of the Bay of Fundy. Just a short bridge from Lubec is Campobello Island, which is in the Canadian province of New Brunswick. Bring your passports so that you can get back into the USA.
