Need ideas for Maine vacation with 16 yr old granddaughter

We are getting a late start making our plans for an eight night vacation in the New England area during the last two weeks of June. Looking for ideas to make our trip the most memorable. We love hiking, shopping, boutiques but not too much history. We have flexibility on when we leave happened like to stay in at least two different places. Would also consider flying into one airport and out another. Any ideas would be appreciated!!

I'd fly into Portland and out of Bangor, if that's possible. The two towns are only a two hour drive apart. If it costs much more, you could easily fly both into and out of either one.

Acadia National Park definitely has the most of what you are interested in. The hiking is at all levels. The carriage roads are fun to bike. There are boat excursions available, plus gardens, shopping, and three different villages surrounding the Park for dining, lodging, and exploring: Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor, and Southwest Harbor.

If you fly into Portland, I'd be sure to make a long stop (maybe a one night stay) in Freeport, Maine. It's an outlet town and the home of the L.L. Bean flagship store. But instead of the usual malls or strip malls of the usual outlet shops, Freeport has kept it's small town feel. You can park and wander around the small village. L.L. Bean has nicely landscaped it's parking lots and walkways. They even have displays with fish tanks and stuffed moose. I recommend Azure Cafe for lunch there.

A slow drive up highway one from Freeport to Bar Harbor can be pleasant in June, which is before the height of the tourist season which doesn't get real busy until July 4th. A stop in Camden for lunch (or overnight) would be good. They have lovely boutique shops and a pretty harbor filled with wooden sail boats. Even a waterfall tumbles into the harbor. It's a very walkable village with nice restaurants.

I'd go as early in June as you can. The New England kids will still be in school right through the middle of June, making up snow days from the four big storms we had in March.

Check car rental rates before booking into one airport and return from another. Currently they're showing $200 more to drop in Bangor than to pick up and return in Portland, for example.

If you overnight in Camden, a morning (or a sunset) hike up Mt. Battie would be nice.

Thanks for the tip about car rental rates. That would be a lot of money when the airports are fairly close together.
