1 night stay in Baton Rouge or Houma?

Hi All!!

My hubby and I are coming to the states in May 2014 to do a driving holiday.

One part of our trip will be driving from Nashville down to New Orleans, and we wanted to Stay a night at either Baton Rouge or Houma to do a swamp tour and any other "must Do's".

Which would be the better place to base ourselves, to see both places plus we want to see Pierre Part.

Also what accomodation would be central for us to walk to most resturants and shops in each town, and what are the must see and do's while we are in the area??

Thanks in advance,

Tania.

I think I would stay in the Baton Rouge area and not Baton Rouge Itself. There's not much in Houma There are several swamp tours from Baton Rouge as well as New Orleans. I would recommend that you do that. For a special treat you might want to stay at one of the plantations south of Baton Rouge--such as Oak Alley. (You don't get to stay in the big house). Or at ,least drive the River road from Baton Rouge to New Orleans. You see real countryside that way. There are numerous homes to stay in at Vicksburg ,Natchez or St Francisville too. Baton Rouge is not really a walking town so I don't know about shopping areas.

here is the houma tourism website

there is much to do here, however Walking distance to anything is bad, you would need a vehicle. if however you feel like taking a long treck, the Marriot by the Civic Center would be your best bet. since it is centrally located in the city and closest to downtown Houma.

any more questions i'd be much obliged to help.
