Proximity of Hyatt to Extreme Skatepark & Neighborhood

Hi all....I am considering my first trip to Louisville this summer to visit the city and to allow my 13 year old to visit the Extreme Skate Park. The skate park is located on Witherspoon and the hotel I am considering staying at (Hyatt) is located on W. Jefferson. For those of you familiar with that area......1) what kind of walk, in terms of distance and things in the area is it? and 2) Is that area of Louisville considered safe?

There's lots of things located around The Hyatt. You're right next to Fourth Street Live entertainment complex (it's a planned complex & touristy, but has plenty of restaurants etc.). The area is safe enough. But as with any urban downtown area, be aware of your surroundings and don't go wandering down dark alleys alone. For adults, head to The Old Seelbach Bar on the other side of Fourth Street for Bourbon & Jazz.

I wouldn't walk the distance from The Hyatt to The Skate Park. It's gotta be something like 10-12 city blocks. There's a trolley that runs a circuit around the downtown area. However, I think it stops fairly early in the evening. Double check its hours/schedule. Your hotel should be able to give you accurate info on trolley stop locations & times. Here's a route map:

Also - The Louisville Slugger Field (Baseball) is within an easy walk of the skatepark. The Bats are the farm team for The Cincinnati Reds. Louisville Waterfront Park is also very close by. During the summer there are usually free outdoor events going on there.

I think you can also rent bikes at or near, Waterfront Park.

By the way, if you want extra "cool" points with the 13 year old. Take him to Bardstown Road. Home Skate Shop seems to be the place.

You'll find all the little boarders up and down Bardstown Road....especially on the weekends. Also let him check out Ear-X-tacy record store. It's close by (the one on Dundee/Bardstown Rd). The adults can post up in a pub or cafe nearby while the teenager gets to look cool. Take a look at Cafe Lou Lou (for lunch or dinner. Again, the one on Bardstown Rd./Dundee)

Thanks Seagrover......What a wealth of information you are!!!

If you aren't already, maybe you should be president of the Louisville Visitor's Bureau?

Would you know of a decent hotel within closer walking distance of the skatepark than the Hyatt? It may not be feasible, but I was kind of hoping to park the car and be able to walk. If not, I will definitely try out the trolley system you mentioned. I am assuming the trolley runs on the weekend......or at least on Saturdays?

Thanks! But we just spend way too much time bumming around our lovely city. I don't think the Visitor's Bureau would want me. I'm not an early bird.

The trolley runs on weekends, I just don't know the exact schedules. The hotels will know.

There are closer hotels. However, you give up the proximity to Fourth Street Live and Theatre Square. It just depends upon which is more important to you. You'd be closer to Bardstown Road (but not within walking distance)

There's a Residence Inn at 333 E. Market St. (This is as close to the skate park as you are gonna get) It's within an easy walk to the skate park, Slugger Field and Waterfront Park.

A couple of blocks further away is a Courtyard at 100 S. 2nd St. If you stay at Residence or Courtyard, you will be close to several new downtown eateries (like Doc Crows and Patrick O'Shea's or BBC) on Main St. (near The Yum Center at 2nd & Main).

And heading in the other direction (on the other/east side of Slugger Field), you'll find an area referred to as "NuLu" It's a redeveloping area of the city with new art galleries & eateries popping up like: "Harvest" and "Ghyslain" and "732 Social".....also check out "The Blind Pig" For live music (for the adults), there's Stevie Ray's.

If you decide you want to visit Bardstown Rd., you'll have to either drive or take a cab. Not sure what type of parking situation you're used to, but I live in the Bardstown Rd. area. And while it's a little congested directly on Bardstown Rd., it's not difficult to go a half a block off the main drag and find a spot.

Louisville Book & Music Exchange if your teenage is into videos & guitars. They're right next to each other (again -- only a block or two from the Home Skate Shop and Ear-x-tacy)

In the meantime, the adults can head to La Bodega Tapas Bar to wait on the kiddo. It's conveniently located a couple of doors down from the guitars and videos.

You better check to see if the skate park is still open. I thought I read in the paper that it was closing due to lack of funds and kids tearing it up.

There is the schedule for the Tarc trolleys. I heard the same thing about the Extreme Park. You can go to our website www.louisville.gov and find info and ask about the park. I'd do it for you, but I'm packing for a trip!

Take your son to the Falls of the Ohio across the river. Kids love it. I love it! Yes, the Residence Inn and Courtyard are closest to the Extreme Park. I'd choose a hotel with a pool. Have a great trip!
