Barbecue and Bars

Hello,

My daughter in going to University of louisville this fall and will be on the cheerleading team. Mt wife and I are planning to fly in from boston a few timesa to see some college football. I was wondering where to find the best barbecue places and also some fun bars to hit. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

We went to Marks feed store on bardstown road the day after the derby. The food was very good. The deep fried corn was GREAT!!! There are alot of bars in this area. We had a blast at O'sheas and Ramzis. Fourth street live has a lot of bars and was very packed, definitely the college crowd. The bartenders at wild willies poured the best drink. Th makers mark room was nice and relaxing, the bartenders were helpful with the bourbon list and the food was good.

You'll find a number of good BBQ places here in Louisville.

Mark's Feed Store is a small, local chain with 4 or 5 locations in the area. We prefer the one on Bardstown Rd (it's also the closest to U of L).

For good BBQ in a great dive bar, you shouldn't miss The Frankfort Ave. Beer Depot (FAB-D). I couldn't find an online menu for them. But here's a review. It's one of our favorite spots.

The Kentucky BBQ Company also gets good reviews. I haven't been there since they moved to their new location. http://www.kybbqco.com/

For bar hopping, head to Bardstown Road. It's about 3 miles of bars, restaurants, shops etc. Imagine Newbury Street with more bars. (I made a list of the bars along Bardstown Rd. in an old thread. I'll go find it & post it later)

The previous reply mentioned Fourth Street Live. It's a planned, entertainment complex with lots of themed bars & restaurants. It's touristy. Kind of like Faneuil Hall (except more touristy).

Frankfort Avenue also has a couple of miles of shops, restaurants & bars. Along Frankfort Ave., "The Irish Rover" is a good place to get a pint and a fish & chips. "Bourbon Bistro" is a bit more upscale restaurant with a good Bourbon selection.

If you have the time and the weather is nice, take a drive out River Road (about 6-7 miles) to "Captain's Quarters". It's right on the river with a huge outdoor deck. There's an outdoor bar and they have live music on the weekends.

Here's the thread that lists the bars along Bardstown Road.

This slide show pretty much takes you on a journey down Bardstown Road with a side trip by Lynn's Paradise Cafe and The Monkey Wrench.

I forgot to mention Lynn's Paradise earlier. You'll probably want to check it out while your here also.

Here is a shout out for the Frankfort Avenue Beer Depot. I think I'll go there today just to eat the green beens.

I might add you need some "blues" to go with your BBQ. Check out Stevie Ray's downtown. A small locally owned blues bar with a Memphis style atmosphere.
