summer visit

Husband and I are planning a visit in August, and staying at the State Park Lodge. Aside from hiking and visiting a few wineries, anything else we should include? Something within an hours drive that we could visit? We are mostly interested in historical sites and nature. We will be there from Monday-Friday.

Thanks!

Stop by Matthiessen State Park, which is only three miles south of Starved Rock. It's just as beautiful as Starved Rock, with fewer visitors.

Buffalo Rock State Park is nearby, and it is the home of the Effigy Tumuli, which is "earth art." Huge mounds of earth have been shaped into a snake, turtle, catfish, frog, and water strider. You can't really make them out when you are hiking, but it is interesting. Currently, the effigy tumuli trail is closed due to some safety issues related to a nearby gun range, so check their website before going.

You could also check out the Illinois Waterway Visitor Center.

Some other interesting places, but a little farther than one hour from Starved Rock:

Anderson Japanese Gardens in Rockford. We had Sunday brunch in their restaurant last year and it was lovely.

Ronald Reagan Boyhood Home in Dixon.

John Deere Historic Site in Grand Detour, near Dixon

Lorado Taft's Eternal Indian Statue in Lowden State Park, near Oregon. Castle Rock SP and Lowden Miller SP are just south of Oregon, and have some nice hiking trails.

If you want to while away an afternoon watching trains, Railroad Park in Rochelle could be fun. We have been there three times. On our first trip, the trains were frequent. On the other two trips, not so much.

The Farnsworth House in Plano. I haven't visited here, but I'm planning to see it before too long.

You can also tour the Haegler Carus Mansion in LaSalle. There is the Redick Mansion in Ottawa, the Lock 16 I&M Canal boat ride tour in LaSalle which is interesting. There is the LaSalle County Historical Society museum in Utica, lots of neat things in there. I'll try to think of more.
