what is the area like

We are looking at retiring to the Marion general area. Can anyone who lives there give us an idea what its like? I know the weather, but shopping, medical hosp and drs recreation etc would be appreciated. We notice the real estate is very inexpensive for a house with acreage or even on the water. Wonder why? thanks.

johnmarg, I don't live in Marion, but I know people who live in the area. Shopping is fine with all major retailed represented. Medical facilities are also good. Much of the recreation in the area is centered on outdoor activities, especially fishing, boating, hunting and golf. Crab Orchard is a vey popular lake with duck hunters and fishermen. Also, Marion is an easy drive to Kentucky Lake, a nice vacation spot. Housing is cheap, especially compared to California, from lack of demand. I know that some nice upper market homes are for sale at prices less than their construction cost. Although the cities of Murphysboro, Carbondale and Marion make a nice small metro area, much of Southern Illinois is underpopulated and somewhat economically depressed. The primary industries historically were farming and coal mining. While farming is still evident, most mines have closed. A major source of employment in many SoIll areas is now prisons. The casinos on the Ohio also provided jobs and tax revenue. Southern Ill University at Carbondale also provides jobs and well as cultural events and entertainment.

Hello. Marion property values are low for lack of jobs. It's a nice community. Kids on bikes without fear of being nabbed, and lots of pretty woodlands and wetlands nearby. Rend Lake is nearby, and it gets beautiful. I can tell you there are a lot of "backwoods" types of people near there. You will see quite a bit of what some people refer to as rednecks, but the hunting and atmosphere is great. You can see the stars if you drive out far enough. I do suggest looking a bit more southways if you are wanting land and nature though.

The ticks can get bad in the warmer months if you're in the woods. Some people have "lagoons" which are open sesspools. Deer occasionally destroy flower gardens. There are close by interstates with a lot of trucks.

The southern Illinois area is quite plagued by businesses hiring people only as temps so they don't have to pay benefits. That is why land is cheap. I'd love to own land out by Hardin County though. That's south of there.

Shopping is interesting. There are malls just like anywhere else, but it's things like the artisan studio nearby and the little antiques and character shops that make the area fun. I can tell you that if you're into collectibles, there are a lot to be found if you like to browse. You just need to span out to any of the close by cities.
