Thanksgiving Weekend

We are considering Galena for our anniversary trip on Thanksgiving weekend. Does anyone know of any special events at that time? What's there to do that time of year?

1. Re: Thanksgiving Weekend

If you go to the Jo Daviess County Visitor's Bureau website, they have a calendar with things going on.

The day after Thanksgiving starts the BIG shopping weekend in all of the stores on Main St. All of the stores are decorated outside and inside starting a few days before Thanksgiving. It is the prettiest time of year in Galena during the holidays. There is a new horse and carriage ride down Main St. That would be fun to see the decorations.

Chestnut Mountain should be open for skiing if the weather gets cold enough. They make their own snow, it just has to be cold enough not to melt.

There's a parade the day after Thanksgiving, and Santa comes into town, and they are approaching the different church choirs to try to get caroler singers strolling up and down Main St.

Usually Eagle Ridge has the homeowner decoration contest right after Thanksgiving until Christmas. It's a competition for the homeowners there, and they have a map, and you drive around looking at all the different decorated houses. They give a prize for the best one, and the people out there, besides their huge and expensive houses, decorate to the hilt to try to win the contest.

Your best bet is to go on the website. It has info on pottery demonstrations, art exhibits, and that kind of stuff. Have fun, it's a great place to visit, especially during the holidays.
