Hotel in Downers Grove plus cab or car dilemma

We are three days in Downers Gove attending a meeting at Midwestern University.

One day we would like to visit Chicago and understand there is a rail station which take you into central Chicago.

Would if be more practical/cost effective to hire a car at the airport or should one just take cab to and from O'Hare and train into Chicago. If the latter, then can someone suggest where to stay which is within walking distance from the Station and shops/eating places as well as the University.

Also which is the best stop to get out of in central Chicago to see the sights.

Many thanks

For the day trip downtown, take a cab to this Metra station - metrarail.com/metra/…station.MAINST-DG.html - get off at Union Station downtown.

There are no hotels within walking distance to MU. Closest hotel is a Red Roof Inn about a mile away. How do you plan to get to/from the meeting?

Rent a car at the airport when you arrive. You will need it in the suburbs. Drive to the Metra ( regional train) station and park there to take the Metra train into the City. Do not drive into the city if you can take a commuter train The regional train takes you to Union Station in the West Loop (business district/ downtown). You can walk, cab or take the "L" (city trains) once you're in Chicago.

Shallowshoals is correct. You're going to want/need a car. The Downers area is not well-served by either mass transit or taxi. You'll need to drive in the area to go anywhere (restaurant, hotel, train station). The Metra station (taking the train into the City is a good idea) is a ten minute drive from Midwestern Univ. The Westin in Lombard is a nice choice for a hotel that will be fairly close to your conference. It will be free to park the car there.

Downers Grove is served well by taxis. The major hotels have taxi ranks - other hotels will call a taxi for you. You won't need to wait long for a taxi. There is also a taxi rank at the Metra station.

For hotels, your best bet is one of the hotels clustered around Yorktown Mall in Lombard, which isn't too far from Midwestern University. They aren't exactly within walking distance though. Look at the Embassy Suites, Westin, and Hyatt Place. A little farther is Oak Brook, where you will find a lot of hotels. There is a Holiday Inn Express in DG, along with a Marriott, but they are a tad farther than the Lombard hotels. My mother stayed at the DG Red Roof Inn (a long time ago) and didn't like it at all, but it is probably cheap.

I have a friend who uses taxis several times a week within Downers Grove without problems. At most times of the day I see taxis at the Downers Grove train station. Taking the taxi to and from the airport, and then to and from the train station, and then back and forth to MU will add up though. Do you feel comfortable driving in the US?

Thanks everyone for your recommendations. Have decided that it is probably best to hire a car from the airport - have taken on board the fact that Downers Grove is a suburb and therefore you need a car to get around.

If we have a car it would enable us to get to the university and rail station and maybe do some shopping. I assume you can park at the university?

Re airport to Downers Grove we have been caught out by tolls in the past - is there anything to be aware of?

Also the Westin has been mentioned twice - will check that one out and compare prices.

Many thanks for all your comment, its been extremely helpful.

The most direct route from ORD to Downers Grove is along 294 & 88 - both are tollways. http://www.illinoistollway.com/homepage

You might want to rent a GPS with your car - your car hire company will have them.
