Need Hip, Great Restaurant Recs

I will be in Chicago (staying at the The Conrad) with three girlfriends next month. We are all early 30's and looking for great dinner restaurants to dress up, have cocktails, and a delicious meal. I have read a lot of posts with restaurant recs, but not specifically "see and be seen" type places. Any ideas? Early front runners are MK and Nine......

Not sure I understand? If you want to see and be seen, then Gibson's but call now for a reservation.

Rono - To clarify, we live in Oklahoma, so when we hit the big city, we like to go places with fabulous atmosphere and opportunity to people watch a bit for local trends, things we can incorporate into our rural lives. We are all also foodies so we appreciate a well prepared meal accompanied by top level service.

Rono - you like Gibson's above MK and Nine?

Thanks for the help everyone.

I just went to Le Colonial on Rush St. last Friday and it was FABULOUS.

I'm not sure Gibson's is what you are looking for, it's part of the viagra triangle, known as a place where older wealthy men go looking for young ladies and is a Chicago steakhouse. Celebrities do pop in here on occasion. Gibson's is very popular with wealthier folks so regular folks, even with reservations, often get delayed significantly.

I think Nine would be a better option for what you are looking for.

You might also have a look at Carnivale, I haven't been there since early spring but it was really hopping on a Thursday night. The food was good and so were the cocktails. Take a look at the reviews on Metromix, looks like it's still a happening place.

Japonais [French/Vietnamese], Japonais [interesting sushi], Gibson's [steak], Sushi Samba Rio [sushi with South American flavors. Odd, but it works], and Nine [steak] are all good restaurants with interesting bars either right there or within a block.

Any of those places would work. I have not dined at Japonais, but I know the bar pretty well. That would seem to be a good choice particularily since there are a lot of other bars in the area. Also, if the weather is nice, it has some outdoor seating and the scene along Rush is interesting.

I just re-read my immediately past post.

In the final paragraph, I mixed up Japonais and Le Colonial. In fact, I've dined at Japonais a few times. I thought the food was outstanding. There is nothing really around the area though. I also am not sure I would walk there, since the block that the place is on is fine, there are some public housing projects within just a few blocks. It an interesting mix of high end condos and townhouses, with the remaining parts of Cabrini Green (a legendary housing project) within about three blocks.

Le Colonial is the restaurant that I have not been to, but the area and the bar [I know that place well] are what you are looking for.

BOKA for dinner and Landmark for dancing. Note: they are in the immediate vicinity of the Steppenwolf Theatre and the Royal George Theatre on N. Halsted (just north of North Avenue), so you could conceivably have dinner, go to a show and then go dancing afterwards.

MK is delicious, also love the recs here for Le Colonial. I'd hit the downstairs lounge at Japonais instead of dinner there. Also check out Bella for a lounge/drinks. Reserve is another "see and be seen" lounge for drinks.

MK and Nine are kinda passe imho, that was like 4 years ago. Carnivale is doing well, but it's not the classiest crowd, and again that's my personal opinion.

Ballo, 445 N. Dearborn is quite hip at the moment. Japonais is a little bit out there but that's a good recommendation too. Le Colonial is always nice, with a cool bar upstairs.
