Sofitel Chicago Water Tower hotel or Conrad Chicago?

Planning our 1st trip to Chicago Easter 2014. We think we have narrowed hotels down to the 2 above. Any recommendations for which hotel to go for. They are pretty similar in price and hopfully they are both in a central location for sightseeing!

Both are excellent choices. The Sofitel is in more of a residential area and close to the Catholic cathedral if you are attending its Easter services. The Conrad is closer to downtown and attached to a shopping mall so bad weather won't ruin your visit.

Two very good choices. They are within walking distance of each other. Conrad is above tourist central and the Sofitel is one block off Michigan Ave. in a quieter location. One block can make a difference downtwon. The Sofitel is also near St. James Episcopal Cathedral and Ascension Episcopal that puts on a great Easter 6-candle Mass, plus Fourth Presbyterian. (Our RealEstate agents call the area "The Cathedral District") But then you didn't ask about that. You'll find downtown Chicago very compact and with all public transit converging in "The Loop".

Sorry, what do you mean when you say one block can make a difference downtown?

Michigan Ave can be a mob of tourists, shoppers, residents and businessmen but the Sofitel - one block off Michigan Ave. is in a quiet and actually a rather sedate neighborhood. There is a Tea House in the pocket park across the street to the east; Loyola Univesity across the street to the south. Two blocks north on Rush St at Oak St. is high end boutique shopping (google Oak St.) 2 blocks south there is discount shopping at Marshall's and Home Goods. South of Division St is bars and restaurants but north of Division St is The Gold Coast (read: rich people, treelined neighborhood and the Roman Cardinal's mansion). The Conrad is built above the North Bridge Mall about 1/2 mile south of the Sofitel and a couple of blocks off dead center of tourist central.

Wait: I just remembered: Loyola is building a new building across from the Sofitel and they will probably still be working on the steel come Spring. That could add daytime noise to that block. Darn.

As a tourist, I have stayed in both hotels and prefer Sofitel. The hotel is modern, sleek, and comfortable, with a lovely(although pricey) lounge, and my husband and I loved the location. The neighborhood near Sofitel doesn't feel as touristy, but you're still only a block or two away from all the spots. The Conrad is great too, so I don't think you will go wrong with either. Enjoy!
