chicago trip report...7/11-12/13

visted childhood friends here in mokena/frankfort area...had a couple days to go into the city.

first day, had a chicago hot dog at portillos in frankfort...am not a hot dog expert, but portillos was "ok"....the best ive ever had was the original nathan's on coney island...was very surprised to see halibut sandwhiches on the menu for $5.50...definately worth a try and a good value for money. Next up was a cubs game. We rode the Metra train into the city to the Lasalle st. station ($5.50 one way)...travel time about an hour...then walked approx 1/2 mile to the subway station and took the red line train, i believe, to Addison, which is close to Wrigley Field.

Wrigley was awesome...walked all around the ballpark before the game...saw the statues of Harry, Santo, Billy and Ernie...didnt see one for jack brickhouse tho (maybe he doesnt have one?)....sat in the left field bleachers for the 7:05 start vs St.Louis...bleachers are GA, so my friends secured great seats in the 2nd row whilke i explored wrigleyville outside. Perfect weather and the night game atmosphere was outstanding...fans were giving cards CF john jay all kinds of grief after he misplayed a line drive...fans were also giving the cubs LF some grief...maybe due to his contract. From wrigley it took about 2 hours to get home to the suburbs via the trains.

Next day, back into the city for the Art Institute...highly recommend this museum, had never been there even tho i grew up in the area. Loved seeing the Impressionist Galleries...the Monets, Renoirs, Van Goghs....they also have a special exhibit: Impressionism, Fashion and Modernity ongoing thru 9/22...well worth the $23 admission. note: illinois residents are free thurs night 5-8pm....also....do not miss the miniature houses exhibit...amazing!

topped the day off w/ a walk thru millenium park...the bean is a must-see!....and some giordanos deep dish pizza near the prudential building...excellent!...had a brief ride on the water taxi from michigan avenue...and went up to the 19th floor of the trump building...nice terrace view there..took the train into the city this day also.

all in all...a great visit...but must return in the winter for a Blackhawks game!

Great report - by the way, the Jack Brickhouse statue is actually downtown in front of the WGN building on Michigan Ave.

Jack Brickhouse's tribute at Wrigley is the "Hey Hey" written on the foul poles. http://www.emporis.com/images/details/483449
