alternative to Grand Lux Cafe

Hi. Had a plan to go to Grand Lux Café for their smashing desserts but called first and found out they are no longer accepting reservations for this weekend. Looks like the hour wait will make the natives very restless. Anyone have an idea for an alternative place for a unique dessert, maybe a place that accepts reservations or is less likely to make us wait for 1 hour? Thanks in advance!

If you really want to go there just go and put your name down and then go shopping or for a walk while you wait

The "natives" don't get restless waiting around to eat at The Grand Lux. It's for tourists. The Cheesecake Factory is the same restaurant and the wait will be the same too. Just do like everyone else and get your pager and wait. Or do take out.

If you're going just for desserts, go off-peak (say after the lunch rush and before dinner) and you shouldn't have to wait much at all. You can tell as soon as you get near the entrance whether it's super crowded or not.

There are a million restaurants around there and many of them have great desserts. If Grand Lux is too crowded when you're going then you can always wander around. One specific place that immediately comes to mind, though, is Leonidas Chocolate Café just up on Chicago Avenue. Muy yummy chocolate, crepes and gelato.

ps "Natives" obviously referred to the OP's entourage, not Chicago residents. It's just a figure of speech.

Can't wait to try Leonidas Chocolate Café. The waffles sound good and so does the white hot chocolate. I also found Deca (something like that) at the Ritz-Carleton has desserts and they do accept reservations. That might help someone with a similar dilemma.

Sit outside at Deca. They just opened their outdoor space.

Wait a sec: Grand Lux never did take reservations. Did they start a new policy since they've closed 9 of their 18 locations? If you're not after a giant cake that feeds three you might also consider Ghiradelli, More Cupcakes or if you're feeling adventuresome go to Margie's on Western Ave. (take the Blue Line to the Western stop and walk 2 blocks north) http://www.margiesfinecandies.com/
