Hot Doug's from W lakeshore

What would be the route to get there and travel time?

Are there any similar options closer to downtown?

It's a two bus trip - about an hour. In addition, you'll be waiting in line at Doug's.

There's a trip planner tool on the homepage of - http://www.transitchicago.com/default.aspx

There are numerous places to get a hot dog downtown. Pick a hole-in-the-wall like America's Dog on Randolph, Gold Coast Dogs on Wabash, Downtown Dogs on Rush, or Portillo's. You don't have to buy into the Hot Doug's hype.

Hot Doug's is really far without a car. Stick with Westminster downtown.

With all due respect to the above poster, IMHO, Hot Doug's does deserve the allocades it's received over the years. It isn't just hype.

The places mentioned above provide products in a similar vein as Hot Doug's (i.e., specialty sausages), but IMHO don't expect quite the same experience.

That being said, I agree with the above posters: If you are a first-time visitor with very limited time (3 days or less), especially if you are coming for a weekend or long weekend and if you are staying in that area of the city; if you are only looking to experience a Chicago-style hotdog (which isn't what Hot Doug's is really about); and unless you are really determined to spend a majority of a day on this enterprise, it would be best for you to consider one of the other options mentioned.

Unless a person is really passionate about food and/or has more visiting time, this opportunity is better suited for a repeat visitor.

We went to Doug's a couple of years ago and it wasn't even at a peak eating time. We waited in line for over1.5 hours. Our groups collective opinions were that we would never do it again!

There was nothing about the experience that made it worth standing in line for an hour and a half. We've proably been to Chicago twenty plus times over the years and even we thought we had wasted time. For anyone that is an infrequent visitor to Chicago I would think it should be really far down the "must do" list.
