Glamping (Glamorous Camping) near Chicago

Hello, my fiance is coming from NJ to visit me in the Chicago land area. We will be celebrating our 6 year anniversary and I would love to have a day/evening of camping with him.

Does anyone know of a full service camping company? I don't own any of the supplies and need it for just one day. I've heard of this "Glamping" concept through California, but I don't think it's reached the Midwest just yet.

If anyone has ideas of locations within 2 hours driving of Chicago or of companies that will supply camping gear, please get in touch with me. I really appreciate it !

If you have never tent camped before, do not try it on your own. Camp with some friends who have camped before. Also, good tent camp sites relatively close to Chicago are hard to find on the weekends; they are booked and taken early.

Hey, look at this. There really is "glamping"! But none in Orange County, where the housewives are from, or around Chicago.

Somebody must be doing it.

I am a glamper-in-the-making...after years of tent camping as a kid and now with my own family of 5, we've been stepping it up each time we head out...I love being outdoors and "unplugged" but with lots of the comforts of home. There are several places near Chicago that you can experience glamping without renting a bunch of equipment which could get costly and more work than you may be anticipating. Here are a few ideas:

1. Wandawega lake resort, elk horn, WI, A Vintage Boyscout Camp with lodging options. They even have a luxe treehouse!

-Stuff to do here: Boating, hiking, basketball, tennis, shuffleboard, baseball, fishing, swimming, archery, bonfire, wiener roasts – basically: all things camp

-Past the bonfire pit, and a short hike up the hill is a grouping of 3 original vintage boyscout canvas cabins. See this listing on AirBnB: http://www.airbnb.com/rooms/97648, and visit wandawega.com for more info

-2 bedroom cabinThe two bedroom cabin features french doors that open to the terraced deck facing the lake. See this listing on AirBnB: http://www.airbnb.com/rooms/97657

-One Bedroom Log Cabin144 sq. ft. log cabin (as featured in the book A Very Modest Cottage) is cozy and a stone's throw from the waters edge, with its own fire pit and patio. See this listing on AirBnB: http://www.airbnb.com/rooms/94696

-Three bedroom CabinThe 3 bedroom cabin has its own half bath, kitchenette, showers, deck and lake views. See this listing on AirBnB: http://www.airbnb.com/rooms/98941

2. Starved rock state park....they have cabins you can rent. This is a beautiful area to hike....pack a picnic and a bottle of wine and hike into the canyons.

3. Glamp at home....borrow a tent or invest in one and You can create an outdoor room in your own backyard with all of the comforts of home. check out this pin on Pinterest for inspiration.: http://pinterest.com/pin/232709505715974490

There are sill some old-school, family-run resorts in Northern Wisconsin offering rustic cabins on beautiful lakes. Check out Black's Cliff or Hilltop Cabins in Hazelhurst, just south of Minocqua and an hour north of Wausau.

Some Universities have outdoor recreation programs which rent out camping gear, and not just to students. I have done this at several schools out west, but dont know about Chicago universities, so check around. I have bought tents at Walmart for as cheap as $25 You could buy stuff there and then donate to charity and take the tax write off. Goodwill stores etc may also sell used gear, though test it out first at home before going camping. Also check with local chapters of boy/cub scouts, which may have gear they will rent.

Camping sites within 2 hours can include several spots around the Indiana Dunes State Park and National park. There are also campgrounds nearby, like Jellystone Park, which have cabins you can rent. You can even take the South Shore railroad there, and then just walk or taxi to the nearby park (if your not bringing too much gear with you)

See? Even the guy from California doesn't get "glamping". How about we let this silly question die an unnatural death? It's a year old and has been answered.
