West Loop or River North

Hi all, we will be in Chicago for a few days in August and trying to decide which area to stay (likely AirBNB). We have narrowed it down to West Loop or River North and are leaning towards River North. In terms of what we want to do:

Concert at United centre (doesn't impact where we stay)

General walking around during the day to Skydeck, Millennium Park, Navy Pier etc.

We love food and would prefer to be closest to somewhere with the most good options - seems to be River North? We like to experience different types of food, when I say good I do not necessarily mean high end.

We will walk around the shops if in the area but not specifically planning on doing lots of shopping.

Any advice appreciated!

IMO - River North is the better option. Please ensure that the property you’re considering is properly licensed by the city.

Thanks, there are fewer Airbnb options in River North so might end up at a hotel anyway

Where in the West Loop? The Fulton Market District, which runs along Fulton Market from about Halsted St (800 West) to about 1400 West is loaded with restaurants and more opening all the time. There are also restaurants on Lake St and Randolph St. Plus a few more on the north south intersecting streets. They run the gamut from burgers and pizza up to haute cuisine and everything in between. It's a very lively area with people out enjoying themselves until late evening. IMO, the greatest concentration of interesting food options is around there. But there are many fine and interesting places to eat scattered in different neighborhoods around the city. Many are easily accessible by public transit and of course uber, lyft and taxis are always an option.

But it's not as easy to get to the main tourist venues from parts of the West Loop as it is from River North. There are a few bus routes and there's the Lake St El (Pink and Green Lines). In contrast, River North gives you the options of the Red Line running beneath State St. and buses on State St, Clark St and Michigan Ave. As Dave mentioned, there are numerous restaurants in River North as well.

River North. The West Loop is somewhat isolated from the Loop by the Expressway and mediocre public transit. BUT: River North is high rise expensive properties and most buildings ban airBnB. Be very careful that you are renting a licensed property. Chicago is not short-term rental friendly. Stay in a hotel.

If you go Airbnb please post at least cross streets. Most are not legal in the areas you mention. For tourist items I would stay RiverNorth in a hotel & then Lift or Taxi to Fulton Market area for restaurants.

Thanks all. Decided to go with a hotel and looking at the Trump - looks to be a good location and central to everything. Any comments on this before I book please?

Many thanks!

Think your views depend on your views of the person's name on the building. Sometimes on weekends there are protests around the building not to get political just an FYI. When in Aug? Lolla will announce its lineup depending if they sell out the 4 day passes today on Wed. . That really affects early Aug rates. Enjoy
