Vero Beach resort & Spa or Caribbean Court in February?

Any advice from anyone who has stayed at either place? My wife, teenage son and I are looking to get away from the cold for a long weekend in February. both places have a plethora of good reviews

I haven't stayed at either, but they're quite different places.

The Vero Beach Resort is by local standards a big, deluxe hotel. Rooms will overlook the pool (lots of big coconut palms), ocean, or the tall condo next door. It's in the beachside 'downtown' area, meaning you can pretty much hide the car and walk around.

The Vero Beach Resort combines the skeleton of a former Doubletree hotel and a new wing, so everything is post-2004, even the swimming pool. Only the parking garage looks the same.

The Caribbean Court is likewise a complete recent rebuild of an older structure. It's a far more intimate place than the Resort. It's connected by a pedestrian path to the beach across the street. Its restaurant has a fine reputation, as does the nearly-new steakhouse across the street and Ti Amo Sempre, a somewhat mobile Italian place now in its 3rd location. Also of note is South Beach Pizza, a tiny local institution.

Your choice might be dictated by location. If you want jewelry stores, Casey's lunch sandwiches, the Cuban restaurant at Costa d' Este, etc., the Resort is the place. The beach itself is narrow. South Beach is a quiet upscale residential area with a broad, attractive beach (including a popular public park), quite walkable at night.

In the somewhat unlikely event of a swell, you'd get to watch some surfing and (especially) bodyboard activity at South Beach, which unfortunately has a crunchy shorebreak. Limestone reefs prevent most of the rest of Vero Beach from having significant surf.

Bing Maps has a birds-eye view feature that shows the beach in great detail. Look north of the South Beach park, opposite Riomar Golf Course, and you can see dark lines in the water. That's the Riomar Reef, which caught at least one Spanish treasure ship during the 1715 disaster, and which provided a plausible imitation of Waikiki surf as Hurricane Bill passed by this year. The birds eye images also show lots of little rip currents (look for short plumes of sand-colored water). Rips do not constitute a serious safety problem at that beach.

Thanks Blue for all your info. I think we'll go with the Kimpton Hotel. They've got a kitchenette in the room-we can cook our own meals and drink our own wine!!

Happy Thanksgiving!
